This week in class we learned about the models for multiplication and division. First we were asked to try and come up with a story problem for 8x7 and 45/9. Then we listed the models for multiplication which are as follows:
Area/Array Model:
Repeated Addition:
Combinations: This model of multiplication is probably the most confusing as it is the most difficult to draw out.
I will go over the division models in next weeks blog.
I really like the video that you found for the area/array model for multiplication. During class, I do the multiplication without thinking about the actual relationships or values of the area. Seeing it done with base 10 blocks helps clarify what I am doing when i split up my numbers and then multiply them. I think that using this with students will help them understand why splitting it up in that way makes doing the multiplication easier.
